"Our Children, Our Future"

In 2004, 8,446 children were substantiated or indicated as abused or neglected in West Virginia. Nationally, 850 children enter the foster care system each day. Furthermore, the majority of these children are impacted by substance abuse.
Please mark your calendar and plan to join us October 2nd for the 2008 CASA Conference to learn more about the issues surrounding foster care and drug endangered children and what we can do to improve the lives of these children.
The annual CASA conference brings together individuals interested in making a difference in a child's life. This year's conference will focus on foster care and drug endangered children issues. Speakers include:
Jeni Silver is a Family Advocate, Parenting Educator, and Community Presenter for the Child Protection Center, Inc. of Sarasota, Florida. Her educational background includes an Associates of Applied Science in Criminal Justice and Accreditation in Child Development. She has presented her 'Survivor Story' at community vigils and national venues such as The American Prosecutors Research Institute and The National Association to Prevent Sexual Abuse of Children along with most recently West Virginia's Court Improvement Program. In addition, she has participated in the 'Saving Children: The Sex Abuse Tragedy Documentary' and has co-authored a specialized parenting curriculum for parents of children that have suffered the trauma of sexual abuse (patent pending).
Dr.Kiti Freier is a Professor of Psychology & Associate Professor of Pediatrics & Public Health at Loma Linda University & Children's Hospital in Loma Linda, California. She is also the Associate Director of the Center for Prevention Research at Andrews University, Michigan, and County Consultant for Infant/Toddler Mental Health for San Bernardino, California. Freier is a Pediatric Neurodevelopmental Psychologist with an extensive background in high-risk infant and youth populations. Dr. Freier is a member of the National Alliance for Drug Endangered Children and an executive board member of the California Alliance for Drug Endangered Children. She is an expert in both research and training related to youth high-risk behavior prevention and intervention nationally and internationally.
Tammy DeHesa is the founder of Making a Difference Support Services and organization that educates, supports and advocates for children and their caregivers involved in the foster care system. Ms. DeHesa is a member the California State Parents Team and a representative on the State Interagency Coordinating Council on Early Intervention. She is also a member of the National Alliance for Drug Endangered Children's Neurodevelopment and Psychosocial Assessment & Intervention.
Kathy Paxtonis the Director of the Behavioral Health & Education Initiatives, Center for Learning Excellence at Ohio State University. Kathy graduated from West Virginia University School of Medicine with a Master of Science Degree in Community Health Education. Her combined experience of over 27 years in the field of mental health, mental retardation and substance abuse prevention and treatment have afforded her the ability to provide expertise in areas of behavioral health and leadership in planning, facilitation, and implementation of evidence base practice at the local, state, and national level as a trainer and consultant.
The conference will be held at the Bridgeport Conference Center in Bridgeport, WV.

“Tour de CASA”
October 4, 2008
The Tour de CASA is a benefit bicycle ride to be held at Pullman Square in Huntington. The event will include a 20 mile and 40 mile ride. In addition, there will be Celebrity Tricycle Ride. The event is co-sponsored by Clear Channel and will occur in conjunction with the annual Oktoberfest. For more information email or call (866) 498-2272.
